Online copywriting tips

Most businesses can see the benefits of investing in a great looking website but often choose to write the content themselves.

The text on your website has a significant part to play when it comes to online sales.

So if you’ve decided to write your own web copy, what are the five most common mistakes you should avoid?

Not considering your audience

Too many websites are written from the company’s perspective and do nothing to put across the benefits of their products/services to the potential customer.

They also use the word “we” too much. This is a big turn off for customers; they want to know what’s in it for them i.e. “this is how you can benefit from buying xyz”.

Not knowing how people read online

Okay, so we’ve all looked at countless websites since the internet came about, but have you ever stopped to think how people read differently online to offline?

When people arrive on your website they want quick information that’s relevant and easy to scan for the main points. If you write long paragraphs of text with no thought to layout, people will soon leave your site and go to a competitor.

Lack of keyword research

Do you know what terms and phrases (known as keywords) people are searching for that are relevant to what you offer?

If you want your website to be found by the people you’re targeting then using one of the free keyword tools online is a must before you write a word of your copy.

Failing to include the most relevant keywords in the right places could mean your site is effectively lost in cyberspace, and if no one is finding it, no one is buying.

No calls to action

What do you want people to do when they visit your website? Buy a product, request a brochure or give you a call?

Whatever you’d like them to do – it’s been proven that it pays to ask. This is known as a call to action and can be something as simple as “order yours online now”.

Basic mistakes

Not everyone is great at spelling but with spell checking functions in most word processing packages, there’s not really an excuse to make mistakes on your website.

I’ve even seen sites that have greeted me with “Wlecome” and I can’t say that I stuck around for very long.

If you want to portray a professional image, it pays to double check everything before you make it live on your website.

These are just some of the many mistakes people make when writing their own web copy.
